Since becoming County Executive, Ilene has upheld Summit County’s proud tradition of supporting our veterans. In each year of her term, the County has contributed $10,000 to the Laura Williams Dunlop Memorial Stand Down. This annual event provides community-based programming to help local homeless and displaced veterans prepare for the winter months. Veterans also receive medical testing, legal counseling, food cards and information on available benefits and services.

To support the growing female veteran population, Ilene led the charge to create Summit Liberty House, the County’s first female homeless veteran housing facility. Over the course of a year, her Department of Community and Economic Development completed work to renovate a vacant property using federal funds. In September 2019, Summit Liberty House was completed and is now owned and operated by Family and Community Services, a local non-profit that provides support services and specialized resources.

Ilene also facilitated the installation and rededication of the County’s World War II Veteran Memorial and announced plans to create the Summit County Veterans Memorial Plaza outside the County Courthouse.
